Unite Health Barre Training is a 2-day course designed to provide you with the foundations to begin teaching barre classes to your clients in both the group and 1:1 setting.

Designed by Sally Harrison, physiotherapist, Pilates instructor and ex-professional dancer, this course focuses on strength, control and balance in functional positions whilst enjoying a dance based approach that everyone can achieve.

Barre Training will equip you with the traditional principles of Barre, with a strong emphasis on movements that target the hips, pelvic stability and lower limb strength. Add variety to your movement classes with the barre repertoire.

The standing component of Barre Training is comprised of a combination of traditional ballet barre exercises as well as functional exercises incorporating lunges, twists and chopping sequences. Resistance bands are incorporated into the movements to provide an external load and extra challenge. Along with general conditioning exercises, you will learn dance specific rehabilitation exercises that can be incorporated into your clinical practice.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand the basic history of Barre exercise classes
  • Learn the correct names and positions used in ballet
  • Describe basics of hip anatomy and correct use of turnout
  • Identify and activate the correct use of foot musculature for pointe/tendu
  • Teach new ballet based repertoire and variations to incorporate into your current movement classes
  • Execute repertoire for a ‘ballet’ based barre workout
  • Execute repertoire for a ‘functional’ movement barre workout
  • Design a new Barre class for your clients

No pre-reading is required for this course.

This course is open to all allied health practitioners and health and fitness professionals. A prerequisite of Pilates mat training/qualification is essential. Experience in teaching small groups is of an advantage but not required, however, please note instruction on how to teach small groups will not be covered.

 

Included in your programme will be a resistance training product which is safe and provides resistance variation for training at the Barre.

Sally was born and educated in the UK and commenced her career as a professional dancer. Following a sudden retirement due to knee surgery, she began her journey in physiotherapy and exercise rehab in 2002. It was at this time that she also qualified in Pilates and personal training.

 

Sally relocated to sunny Sydney in 2006, where she now works part-time in a clinical setting specialising in dance injuries and rehab. She also manages her own business ‘Pro-align’, which integrates clinical Pilates with functional corrective exercise working on an integrated preventative and corrective health and movement model. Sally has a strong passion for movement based treatment and empowering her clients with the knowledge to treat themselves and be independent in their bodies.

 

Sally regularly presents the APPI Matwork Series and is a ViPR master trainer and educator. She still dances regularly and performs in the Cuban Latin scene in Sydney.

Getting there - Find us above Tilly's Art & Office Supplies. Take the thoroughfare between Rozelle Public School and the shop for our entrance.  We are on level 2, stair access only. 

 

Parking - Available on Merton Street both left and right off Darling Street.
