International Update November 2015
UK During the recent October International break for the Premier League APPI Co-Founder Glenn Withers was invited by the head physiotherapist of Manchester United, Neil Hough, to conduct a bespoke 2 day Pilates reformer training program for the physiotherapy and S and C team. Glenn has been involved in professional football in the UK for over 12 years, delivering bespoke training programs, in house weekly inservices and training courses. Glenn's two days with Man U were very intense, spending a lot of time on how to make the use of Pilates relevant to football specific movement patterns, injuries, and time schedules. A large focus was actually on taking the resistance on the equipment down in order to ensure correct activation strategies. They focused on releasing the very common hip flexor over activity and spent a lot of time on ways to engage the gluteals correctly. They investigated how you can use the reformer to manage the contribution of the hamstrings after the glutes have been activated to try to resolve many issues we see in footballers. Many subtle alterations from normal reformer work that Glenn has developed over the years of working with footballers were taken on board and Glenn believes that a large proportion of the movements will now be a daily focus in the management of the players at one of the worlds greatest sporting institutes. "To think that APPI Pilates is now part of Manchester United gives me great pride" Glenn Withers. Geneva, Switzerland International Presenter Bilijana Kenaway updates us on the progress of APPI's Matwork Courses in Geneva, following the launch in September. "I had 16 physios on the course which was taught at Ecole de Sante (Physio/Dietitians) University in Geneva. Two participants in attendance are of huge importance within the Pilates and Physio world; Vice President of Physio Swiss Stephen Simons and Caroline Monbaton, who works at the CPD for Physio Geneva. I only found out that Caroline was working for a physiotherapy education board after the course. At the end of the first day, Caroline stood up and told everyone how fantastic the course was, how much she enjoyed it and how much it was much more clear and relevant for physios. At the end of the course I had everyone saying how much they enjoyed it and how much they learned but in particular Stephen and Caroline. I am very very happy and almost burst into tears when Stephen came up to me and Jennie to congratulation us on a fantastic, very dynamic and professional course. He helped us to get a place at the Physio Swiss with this certification in the first place and he is the one who can negotiate for more certification series and CPD courses from the next academic year. His and Caroline's word of mouth will mean a lot to us going forward". Malta Elisa recently enjoyed a weekend in Malta teaching the dedicated and very enthusiastic Maltese physios the 3D standing Pilates course. All the attendees were thrilled to have one of the founding directors of APPI teaching them and thoroughly enjoyed the functional approach to Pilates that this course offers. USA October has seen the confirmation of our brand new venue in California. Cindy Herzog is the newest member to our International APPI family and will be coordinating matwork level 2 and 3 courses just outside of San Fransisco in February 2016.
