Set Intentions, not Resolutions - Why taking a pause and looking forward with purpose is essential.

There's still time to set yourself up for success in 2021 with the power of 2020 hindsight

As the new year resolutions taper off it can be tricky to maintain motivation for your intentions, and most importantly your balance and overall happiness for the remainder of the year.

You may not be a believer in setting resolutions, and a part of us agrees with you. The pressure we place on ourselves to set and stick to the goals we make in January more often than not lead to a guilt-ridden February/March when the gym visits wane, novels you intended to read still sit on the shelf gathering dust, or those guitar lessons still haven’t been booked.

How about, instead of setting resolutions, set your intentions.

Don’t look back on the past year with disdain and write it off as a complete waste. After such a challenging year, it’s important to pause and reflect on the lessons you’ve learned, so that you can use them to grow, so you can find meaning amongst all the chaos, and so that you can look to the year ahead with purpose.

How to reflect on the past 12 months, that proved to be one of the hardest times we've seen in the world

Ask yourself these questions to help you reflect:

  • What was your happiest moment?
  • Who did you miss most through the lockdowns?
  • How much stuff do you really need to make you happy?
  • What couldn’t you live without?
  • What energised/drained you?
  • What did you do for fun?
  • What was the best decision you made?
  • What relationships did you let go of?

Now, ask yourself these questions to work towards a happier, healthier, and more balanced version of yourself this year.

  • What will you do for your mental health?
  • How will you practise gratitude?
  • What will you say ‘no’ to?
  • Which relationships will you focus on?
  • How will you create work/life balance?
  • What career opportunities do you want to create?
  • What do you want to completely change?
  • How will you improve your physical health?

We asked Unite Health Owner & Director, Sarah Todd, about the challenges she faced in the past 12months, the lessons she learned, and how she’ll be making the most of the year ahead.
