Curtsey & press for the hip and pelvic complex

Curtsey & press for the hip and pelvic complex
This is a combination exercise to strengthen the muscles that support the hip and pelvic complex. It shows a both level change and press motion of the upper limb against resistance. This exercise energises the posterior oblique sling well, therefore aiding in pelvic stabilisation in a standing position.

https://youtu.be/kDKLzOajwUk It opens and loads the back line with the bend component and then shortens and contracts with the press component as the lats and gluts come closer together. Each client will need good range of motion in the hip region to enable a deep bend and thus load the hip effectively. We also need to check that the shoulder remains controlled and isn’t hitching up or protracting/ forward tilting when the arm is raised. Good rhythmic timing is also desirable to encourage the on/off loading of this muscular sling. To learn more about treating the hip and pelvic complex check out our new course:

Assess, Treat & Train The Pelvic Complex

The hip and pelvic complex is one of the 3 fundamental areas for movement and energy transfer throughout the body, along with the foot/ankle complex and thorax. In a clinical setting we need to not only assess how the body moves but also work out why it is moving inefficiently. How and why did these dysfunctions develop? It is important that we can give our clients a positive movement experience in our sessions, which is why a release alone is not enough. We need to create range of motion, and then with targeted exercises, allow the body to move in a more optimal manner to reset and cement the new, more efficient movement pattern.  The key is to re-integrate the correct patterns into the full body system with a multi-planar approach.
