My Pilates Journey

Sarah Todd - Unite Health Owner & Director

I was first introduced to Pilates when I moved to the U.K and started work with the APPI (Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute). Prior to this I had completed my fitness instructor training and taught group fitness classes throughout my university studies.   I distinctly remember attending my first reformer Pilates class and being hooked immediately. I started to notice changes to my physical body such as improved posture, body awareness, and overall strength. On top of this, I loved the mind-body connection of matching breath to movement, which kept me completely focused in the session.

This love for Pilates lead to me completing my full Pilates teacher training with the APPI in London, and I have never looked back.  I distinctly remember attending Matwork Level 1 and being blown away by the course presenters; I was inspired to say the least. Being physiotherapists, they have a unique understanding of anatomy and physiology alongside clinical reasoning skills as to why you would teach a particular exercise to a client based upon their pain, pathology, and function.

I learnt so much on the teacher training about my posture, muscle imbalances, correct breathing patterns, verbal and tactile cueing and class teaching skills.  I look back now to when I was teaching group fitness classes and wish I had this type of knowledge then. The thing about pilates key elements is that it is entirely transferable to other exercise modalities; breathing, concentration, control, centering, precision, flow, integrated isolation, and routine are all integral components of any exercise routine.

One of Joseph Pilates most famous quotes is, “In 10 sessions you'll feel the difference, in 20 sessions you'll see a difference, and in 30 sessions you'll have a whole new body”, and I can’t tell you how true this is.

Up until recently to be eligible to attend APPI Pilates teacher training you required a three year allied health degree.  For years we’ve had requests to deliver this type of training to everyone, and I am ecstatic to announce it is finally here!  This January we are launching APPI Matwork and Reformer Pilates teacher training to those with no healthcare background so they can share the benefits of Pilates with the general population.

Our 14-day face to face training covers not only matwork and reformer Pilates but also anatomy and physiology.  We firmly believe that a Pilates teacher training course cannot be delivered online, you have to experience the benefits of it to understand the method.

If you love Pilates and have been thinking about a career change for a while, why not take the plunge this year and join us for our intensive Pilates teacher training in either Melbourne or Sydney. VIEW DATES & COURSE OUTLINE HERE
