Unite Health Presenter Of The Month - Sally Harrison
We are thrilled to award Sally Harrison as August's Unite Health Presenter Of The Month. Sally commenced her working career as a professional dancer, however following sudden retirement due to knee surgery, she embarked on her next journey into Physiotherapy and Pilates. We talk to Sally about her love for Pilates and the APPI Method.
How did you get started as a APPI presenter/trainer?
Initially I had contacted the company as I had always wanted to work for them. More recently a physio delegate had recommended me again to UH after doing another course that I had presented. We got in contact and it been great ever since ! Thanks guys!
What’s been the proudest moment in your career?
The proudest moment in my physio presenting career was getting the chance to present my own material at FILEX last year in Melbourne. It is the biggest fitness, physio and health conference in the Asia pacific region. I was very lucky and had a blast!
What is your favourite APPI course to teach at the moment and why?
Level 2 mat. I have been teaching mat classes myself since 2003 and running my own physio led mat class business since 2010. I'm very passionate about helping people to move better and enjoy their life and this is a perfect medium to do this. This course equips physios with so many skills and helps ignite the imagination for making great small group sessions.
Tell us about your new course that has recently become available 'Assess, treat and train the hip and pelvic complex'
I'm super excited to be able to present this course with Unite Health. This course is 99% fully practical and will equip the physio and movement coach with skills to assess the hip/ pelvic region in function, and treat what they find with a release, isolate and integrate model of movement. It is a relatively hands off approach therefore allowing the patient to be independent in their rehab. The exercises learnt can also be applied into a class setting which is excellent to tailor population specific sessions. There is a resistance component too so lots of great ideas for using the resistance band in a 3D functional approach.
What is your favourite Pilates exercise and why?
Roll down with push up. For me the push up is the king of upper limb strength work and can empower so many people (especially older women) in feeling strong and confident with their abilities.
Any advice to share with our readers to help stay motivated health/ fitness wise this winter?
Don't give up! When the mornings are cold and dark maybe look to do an evening class instead. Change up your exercise. Winter can often be a good time to try different classes and sports inside. The body loves variability so change what you throw at it throughout the year for maximum outcomes in strength and tissue health.
Do you have a favourite quote or idol?
My favourite idol or mentor is Gary Gray and his team at the Gray Institute. He is known as the 'godfather of function' and for good reason . Check out some of their info via youtube! As he is a physical therapist also it is very relevant to both clinic and the class setting.
