Abdo prep with variations - an exercise from APPI Pilates Matwork Level 1 from Sarah Todd on Vimeo.

This video demonstrates a series of variations of the abdo prep exercise from the APPI Matwork Level One course.

The model begins by demonstrating the basic abdo prep exercise which is not only excellent for rectus abdominus strength, but when done with good technique is also excellent for awareness of the pelvis and deep abdominal or primary sling strength.

The variation of the magic circle between the knees is often used to challenge the anterior oblique sling and may be indicated if the client finds it difficult to engage their core or maintain alignment of their legs during the exercise.

The variation with the magic circle behind the head is a great modification for those who have inadequate deep neck flexor strength or cervical articulation to perform the movement effectively and would be indicated for those clients who report feeling their neck overworking. When combined they are a great way to target individual components of the exercise and work the core.
