Kneeling hip flexor stretch with arm reach

Kneeling hip flexor stretch with arm reach

Kneeling hip flexor stretch with arm reach from APPI Matwork Pilates.

Focus on pelvis position.

Anterior tilt - will most likely not feel a stretch and might feel “grabby” in the low back

Posterior tilt - opens up the hip joint and the low back.

Observe your clients move at their pelvis and femur during other exercises. Do they remain anteriorly tilted. Is there in fact no movement between their pelvis and femur?

This exercise is a great “stretch” of the hip flexors and also shines a light in the brain of new movement opportunity at the pelvis.

Cue “pubic bone to belly button” or “tuck tailbone under”.

Watch for the pelvis travelling forward and causing discomfort in the low back.

Use a cushion under the knee if needed.

Add the arm reach to invite the psoas to join the movement party and increase the stretch through the hip flexors.

Whether you’ve been sat at your desk, doing your online fitness class, renovating the house or cutting the grass with scissors …this is a great stretch.

If you are a dog lying around watching your owner do her exercises then downward dog and a wag will suffice.
