When you sign up to our hybrid Pilates Instructor course, you’ll have the pleasure of completing your Reformer Intensive training at Scout Pilates and Yoga newest studio in Marrickville. The studio was opened earlier this year, converting what was once an ice-cream factory into a vibrant, energising space beloved by their members and visitors alike. You’ll find bright pink exteriors, plenty of natural sunlight, unisex bathrooms with all the luxurious beauty products you could need, as well as an on-site cafe and store, GOODS, where you can pick up a coffee, some baked goodies, or ready-made meals post-workout. But most importantly, Scout offers a diverse range of classes designed to welcome everyone of all backgrounds and fitness levels, ensuring your Pilates sessions are always enjoyable, empowering and comfortable.
Scout is committed to maintaining a close-knit, inclusive community - even as they continue to expand rapidly, and grow from strength to strength. Now offering an expansive timetable across their two studios in Marrickville and St Peters, their community is at the forefront of everything they do. You can expect to feel very welcomed when you visit for your hybrid course.
We spoke to Scout Studio Manager, Ellen Driscoll, to get the inside scoop on exactly what sets Scout apart from the rest when it comes to offering a community-focused, fun Pilates workout.
How did Scout Pilates become the studio it is today, and what are its core values?
Ellen: Scout was born in 2019, inspired by owner Lucy Beaumont’s experience of teaching Pilates in New York. The goal? To make Scout inclusive, accessible and fun.
We’re now a community for everybody, located in the heart of Sydney’s inner west. Our first studio location was in a chic warehouse in St Peters opposite Sydney Park, and we grew fast, even despite lockdowns! Our second location opened in May 2023 in a converted ice-cream factory in Marrickville with our on-site sister business, GOODS cafe and grocer.
We are firm believers that movement doesn't discriminate - our community is made up of all ages, genders and fitness levels, moving together. Our classes focus on evidence-based movement principles to improve client stability, strength and flexibility.
What types of Pilates classes do Scout Pilates offer?
Ellen: Scout has an expansive offering of mat and reformer Pilates classes - there is something for everyone! We have Reformer Beginners, Essentials, Elevate, Circuit, Power Jump, and even Stretch! Our amazing mat team offers contemporary mat Pilates classes that always deliver on the slow, juicy burn!
We also have Barre and Yoga on our timetable so there's balance. Our teachers curate a mix of classical and contemporary techniques so each class is designed to make Pilates results-driven, rewarding and really addictive. We know that classes need to be effective but also fun to keep you moving!
In what ways does Scout Pilates create a welcoming and inclusive environment for anyone new to Pilates?
Ellen: The first thing that people often notice at Scout is the welcome from our Studio Representatives at the front desk when they check in. They will run you through the facilities and little extras we offer like tea, complimentary sweat towels and our beauty bar before you settle in for an introductory chat with your teacher.
Modifications and progressions are available in every class so people can work to their fitness and experience level. We also have tailored Beginner Reformer classes so people can get comfortable with the beds - though these aren’t compulsory. We host free workshops every quarter to introduce the foundations of reformer, mat and yoga to those who are curious to dip their toes in.
Our inner west community is made up of such a diverse population so we focus on making everyone feel included, right down to using neutral gender language, unisex bathrooms, and offering Parents and Cubs classes to acknowledge families can look many different ways!
How does Scout Pilates foster a sense of community among its students?
Ellen: Scout is well known for being a welcoming community - it’s not uncommon for people to make friends in the hallway, bump into neighbours or coworkers in the studio, or go for a post-workout coffee with other regulars! We try to learn all our clients names (no mean feat!) and host workshops and events beyond our standard timetable offering to encourage connection.
We also offer membership perks that connect our students with other businesses in the community, strengthening our bond with the inner west - our clients are our community both in and out of the studio. We also celebrate the success of clients - we feature community highlights on our socials and have even hosted a book launch for one of our clients.
