She shares all her insider knowledge on the direction the industry is moving in, whether there are enough jobs available, and how to ensure your long-term career success if you want to work in Pilates. Get her insights and wisdom in our chat with Renee below.
What has your career looked like since you completed your Pilates Instructor training?
Renee: I finished my Unite Health APPI Pilates Instructor Certification in August 2022, and started teaching at a few different studios alongside my part time job at the time. Last year I moved into the wellness/Pilates space full time, working as the Studio Manager at Sum Of Us - and I’m still teaching on the side!
What aspirations do you have for the future of your career?
Renee: My long-term aspirations, prior to even starting my course I always said I wanted to work for myself and have my own studio. We’ll see what the future holds!
My short term aspirations are to invest in my own practice, and develop my current skill and knowledge base. I’ve recently signed up for Unite Health’s Mindfulness, Meditation and Breathwork for Pilates course which I’m so excited to delve into.
What made you decide to pursue a career in Pilates?
Renee: My love for movement, Pilates, and helping others move their body and feel good!
How have you seen the Pilates industry change and evolve since you became involved in it?
Renee: The popularity of Pilates is definitely still on the rise! I’ve noticed an increase in boutique studios and it’s more important than ever to have a point of difference from others in the industry; be it your class style (classical/strength/contemporary etc), the way you deliver classes, or even studio aesthetics.
Have you noticed the Pilates industry booming? What effect has this had on your career, and those of the people around you?
Renee: The industry is booming for sure, and this has only provided me with more opportunities. I think more people are realising Pilates isn’t just a ‘trend’, and it has real benefits both physically and mentally! Friends who had never done Pilates before now have memberships!
Has the focus on recovery and low-impact workouts had an impact on the Pilates industry, or your career path?
Renee: Funnily enough, I came across an older gentleman enquiring in-studio on the weekend who had never done Pilates. He has had two knee reconstructions and has been encouraged to do Pilates since it’s a low-impact workout. I frequently encounter clients doing Pilates to recover from injuries, or to build/maintain strength to assist with physically demanding jobs, or even because they’re just generally getting older. Outside of studio teaching, this growing focus on rehabilitation and low-impact movement has opened opportunities for me to teach private sessions!
Do you think there are more career opportunities than ever before in the industry, or is it becoming harder to differentiate yourself as it continues to grow?
Renee: There are lots of career opportunities available. I think it’s a matter of finding your niche as an instructor, and what studios you align with. Doing some classes at different studios before seeking work is a great way to find out if you vibe with a studio, and also helps you to make connections with other instructors and studio owners! It will also look better to a potential employer if you’ve tried their classes out before applying for a job.
How do you recommend people set themselves apart in the industry?
Renee: Find your style and what rings true to you, don’t try and fit the mould of studios or styles that don’t resonate with you. Let your personality shine through in your teaching. Know that not every client will like the way you teach and that’s okay! We’re not going to be everyone’s cup of tea.
Where do you see the industry heading in the future? What advice would you give to people considering pursuing a career in Pilates?
Renee: I envision more studios opening, particularly as the popularity of Pilates continues to rise. I think Pilates for rehabilitation/injury management will continue to grow. I’d love to see the diversity of clients keep growing as well.
To anyone considering a career in Pilates, it’s the best decision you’ll ever make! It opens up so many work options and opportunities. Maybe you’ll make it your full time job, or perhaps it’s just a side hustle. You have the flexibility in picking up shifts to suit your schedule, and teaching at one studio or multiple! The relationships you build with other instructors and clients are really special and make you feel like you’re a part of such a wholesome community.
