APPI’s Equipment Level 1 introduces participants to Clinical Pilates teaching on the large equipment with a focus on lumbopelvic stability. It is also the entry point for those wishing to complete the APPI Clinical Pilates Equipment Certification Series and is a sound introduction to the large Pilates equipment, covering a range of beginner movements.

Beginner level repertoire is taught on the reformer, cadillac, split pedal chair and barrels addressing the lumbopelvic region and lower limb. On this course you will start to understand the ways movements can be adapted to different equipment, and why you would choose one over the other. Experience the movements for yourself and explore how equipment Pilates can be either a regression or progression from matwork exercises.

Pre-requisite:

APPI Matwork Level 1, APPI Pilates Instructor Certification or a formal 2 day Matwork Pilates training course is the prerequisite for Equipment Level 1.

Completing APPI Pilates Equipment Level 1 is the first step to becoming a certified APPI Pilates Equipment instructor and precedes Equipment Level 2, Equipment Level 3 & Equipment Level 4 in the Equipment Certification Series.

On APPI Pilates Equipment Level 1 you will review the five key elements of the APPI Pilates Method to reinforce solid foundations for Pilates teaching. The features of the Pilates equipment (the reformer, the cadillac, split pedal chair, and arc barrel) are detailed comprehensively to ensure optimal posture, technique, comfort and safety. Theory and practical workshops review functional and surface anatomy of the spine, pelvis, and hip.

Thirty-two movements for training lumbo-pelvic stabilisation on Pilates-based equipment are taught through observation, participation and practice teaching. Discussions of the clinical application of the Pilates movements occur throughout teaching, and a presenter-led workshop on exercise selection assists in providing participants with an understanding and ability to teach these exercises to patients and clients after the course. Case studies are reviewed and participants have the opportunity to design and discuss their own treatment plans. A guided workshop on imagery for the pelvis assists participants in generating the skills required for effective cueing.

The video below shows a functional exercise that you will learn on Equipment Level 1: Single leg press on the chair.  Several variations are shown below in the video below so that you can easily adapt this exercise to your clients.
